A Visit to Konya and Opening of an Exhibition about Alija Izetbegović
In the city of Konya in the Republic of Türkiye, an exhibition about Alija Izetbegović titled “100 Years of Alija: Life, Thought, Struggle” was organized by the City of Konya and sponsored by Mayor Uğur İbrahim Altay.
Mayor Altay emphasized that the exhibition was significant because it conveyed the story of Alija Izetbegović’s life and intellectual world, and he stressed that personal items from Alija Izetbegović’s house in Sarajevo were also on display. He said that it was even more significant that the exhibition provided an opportunity to clarify and convey his ideas and his struggle, especially to new generations. The mayor also highlighted the strong connection between Turkey and Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as Alija Izetbegović’s visit to Konya. He emphasized that the exhibition, which they organized, was an event honoring this connection and that Alija Izetbegović’s daughter, Sabina Berberović, was also in Konya that day.
Head of the Meram Municipality, where the exhibition was opened, Mustafa Kavuş, said it was his pleasure to host the event commemorating the life of Alija Izetbegović, and that “he was one of the leaders who can be an example and has an important place in our lives.”
Sabina Berberović and Adis Alagić attended the exhibition opening on behalf of the Alija Izetbegović Foundation. Mrs. Berberović emphasized that she was particularly grateful that the exhibition about Alija Izetbegović was opened in Konya and that she believed it appropriately conveyed his message and the principles he stood for. She said that the peoples of Bosnia and Herzegovina and Turkey cherish close, friendly, and brotherly relations and that the help from the Turkish people and the citizens of Konya to Bosnia and Herzegovina during the Aggression would never be forgotten. “Now, in peace, we are working together on new and wonderful projects and will continue on our path of cooperation. “
The exhibition was created in cooperation with the İlim Yayma Foundation from Türkiye and the Alija Izetbegović Foundation and will be open until the first week of May 2026 at the Tantavi Cultural Center in Konya.
During their visit to Konya in the Republic of Türkiye, in addition to touring the exhibition about Alija Izetbegović, members of the Board of the Alija Izetbegović Foundation, Sabina Berberović and Adis Alagić, also held meetings with officials and representatives of related non-governmental organizations. The Foundation’s representatives were hosted by Governor of the Konya region, Mr. İbrahim Akin, and by Mayor of Konya, Mr. Uğur İbrahim Altay. This was followed by a visit to the Honorary Consulate of Bosnia and Herzegovina in Konya, where the guests were received by the Secretary of the Konya City Municipality, Mr. Ercan Uslu. Sabina Berberović and Adis Alagić also had the opportunity to visit the Museum and Tomb of Mevlana Jalaluddin Rumi, the world-renowned philosopher and mystic, and the meeting and conversation with Mrs. Esin Çelebi Bayru, a descendant of Hazreti Mevlana and Vice President of the International Mevlana Foundation, which cares for his legacy, was particularly cordial.
During their walk around Konya, they also visited the mosque named after Alija Izetbegović and became acquainted with numerous other locations in Konya bearing the name of our homeland, Bosnia and Herzegovina, or Alija Izetbegović, such as a boulevard, a school, a bridge, a park, and a square.
On behalf of the Alija Izetbegović Foundation, we thank the hosts and organizers of this very valuable event for its successful implementation and the hospitality shown—Mayor of Konya, Uğur İbrahim Altay, Head of the Meram Municipality, Mustafa Kavuş, as well as the İlim Yayma Foundation.
