A meeting of participants of the project “100 Years of Alija Izetbegović through Books and Dialogue” organized at the Foundation
The participants of the project “100 Years of Alija Izetbegović through Books and Dialogue” were brought together for a meeting that was held on August 5, 2025 at the premises of the Alija Izetbegović Foundation in Sarajevo. The project, coordinated by the Foundation, involves members of the “Zambak” association from the Republic of Türkiye, the “IN SANA” women’s association from Germany and “Vezirov dućan” from Travnik, Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The project was initiated to mark the 100th anniversary of the birth of Alija Izetbegović in 2025 and includes the reading of four of his most well-known books – Islam between East and West, Notes from Prison: 1983-1988, Inescapable Questions: Autobiographical Notes, and The Islamic Declaration and The Problems of the Islamic Revival. Each of the works is read over the course of two months, after which the responsible association organizes and moderates a discussion via the Zoom platform. During the discussion, a presentation on the book is shown, followed by participants sharing their impressions and engaging in debate on the issues raised by the book.
This project is not only an opportunity for members of the associations to become more closely acquainted with the intellectual legacy of Alija Izetbegović, but also to learn more about his life and the principles he stood for. Participation in the project also provides a chance for networking among members of different associations, establishing new friendships, and strengthening existing ones.
During the pleasant gathering at the Foundation, participants shared their thoughts on the project and presented ideas for new activities and forms of cooperation. At the Alija Izetbegović Foundation they were welcomed by Sabina Berberović, the daughter of Alija Izetbegović and one of the founders of the Foundation, who shared with the guests the memories of her father, interesting details from the time when she served as his interpreter and Chief of Cabinet, as well as the values she believed were of particular importance to him.
We are very pleased to have hosted this meeting at the Foundation and we hope that the newly established ties between members of associations from different countries will bring forth new ideas and joint projects, and that reading the Alija Izetbegović’s books will become a traditional project of the Foundation.
